Nigerias has continued to react as the Governor the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele picks Presidential nomination form.
Part of the basis for people’s reaction is according to Section 9 of the CBN Act, 2007, that stated that the apex bank governor must not venture into any other vocation while in office and must resign in writing to the President if he nursed such intention.
It reads , “The Governor and the Deputy Governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the bank and while holding office shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation whether remunerated or not except such personal or charitable causes as may be determined by the Board and which do not conflict with or detract from their full-time duties…”
Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu among others have called for the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as the Governor the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) immediately.
He stated that the CBN governor should resign immediately having obtained on Friday theN100m presidential nomination form of All Progressives Congress(APC) so that he could face his ambition squarely.
The governor declared that Emefiele could not combine the running of the nation’s apex bank, which he described as a sensitive responsibility, with his political ambition.
Akeredolu, a senior advocate of Nigeria, posited that though “it’s incontrovertible that Emefiele enjoys a constitutionally protected right to belong to any group or association and participate fully, just as any Nigerian, it is, however, difficult to imagine that a person who occupies the exalted and sensitive office of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria will be this brazen in actualizing his ambition.”
However, the governor quickly added that in case Emefiele, who was appointed CBN governor in 2014 and his his appointed renewed by President Muhammadu Buhari, was recalcitrant to his call, then President Buhari should fire him.
Also, Human rights’ activist, Omoyele Sowore, has also reacted to news of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, picking the N100million presidential form of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Sowore who lamented how a sitting governor of the apex bank would make such a move without first considering resignation wrote on his Facebook: “Godwin Emefiele, Muhammadu Buhari and his Cabal personal banker, most importantly one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and probably most brazen thieves has picked up All Progressives Congress N100m Presidential Nomination Form. Nigeria is finished but #WeCantContinueLikeThis #RevolutionNow.”
Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has also asked the CBN governor to resign from his position and pursue his “ill-fated political career”.
She stated in series of tweets on her Twitter handle on that the wrong monetary policies since Buhari assumed office in 2015 which was caused by Emefiele were testament that the bank had handed over its independence to the President.
