A Lagos-based businesswoman, Mrs Oluwapelumi Modupe Alabi, has dragged the Inspector General of the Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos over alleged human rights infringement and violations by the officers of the Force.
The applicant, who was irked by the way Police personnel turned a disagreement between her and her husband, Muyiwa Alabi, into a criminal matter, is seeking redress at the Federal High Court for the enforcement of her fundamental human rights allegedly trampled upon by her husband with the assistance of the men of the Nigeria Police Force.
The applicant is suing the IGP alongside the Assistant Inspector General of Police, F.C.I.D, Alagbon; SP. Ajiboye Omoyupo, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State; The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, SCID; four other officers and Mr. Victor Muyiwa Alabi.
She dragged the defendants to court for their roles in criminalising a mere dispute between Muyiwa and herself as she has remained a target of various Police stations in Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja.
According to the application marked suit no: FHC/L/CS/466/2025, brought before Justice Yellim Bogoro, the applicant (Oluwapelumi) alleged that the ninth respondent, Muyiwa, (husband of Oluwapelumi) is using Police personnel to illegally intimidate, harassed and threaten her in multiple Police stations in the country contrary to section 33 and 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In a sworn affidavit before the court, the applicant averred that she married Muyiwa under the Yoruba Custom and Tradition on 24th October 2024, in Lagos.
She said the union was going on smoothly until a lady named Tosin intruded into the holy union.
“Puzzled by this development, I contacted the him to ascertain the reason for abandoning me but he ignored me. I then did a discreet investigation into the matter and found out that he had moved in with the said woman. He subsequently cut ties with me,” she said.
The applicant further said that shortly after Muyiwa began a new love rendezvous with Tosin, she started receiving threatening messages from unknown persons, as well as seeing threat inscriptions on her car.
Consequently, she said she was shocked when she received a court summons from a customary court, signalling the commencement of divorce proceedings.
The applicant further noted that the customary court slated the matter for hearing on 25th February 2025, but Muyiwa surprisingly also went to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos’ State, SCID (5th Respondent) and ACP Sholla Omilade, (6th Respondent) Lagos State, SCID, Panti, Lagos to raised a false complaints of stealing an SUV that was gifted her by him and wedding ring that was given to her on the day of their marriage.
She noted that the SUV with the registration number LSR 572 JN, with Chassis number 5TDDKRFH7FS138293, was bought for her and she had been using the vehicle before the wedding until the phantom allegation raised by Muyiwa at Panti.
To back up her claim with facts, she showed a video recording of where the SUV and the original documents of the vehicle were presented to her.
She noted that though the Police at Panti were aware of the facts that the vehicle was gifted to her by Muyiwa as against false complaints lodged by him, but that they insisted that she must appear before them on 13th February 2025 with the SUV and the wedding ring, even as she pleaded with them to extend the invitation by a few days since she was out of jurisdiction.
Oluwapelumi stated further that rather than the 5th and the 6th Respondents do a thorough investigation into Muyiwa’s false allegation, and wait for her to return from her journey, the duo directed their officers to forcefully retrieve the SUV in a commando style as she insisted that the said vehicle was purchased for her by her husband during the pendency of their marriage.
The applicant also said that as Muyiwa was using officers and Policemen at Panti to intimidate and harass her, he thereafter went to lodge another false complaint at Alagbon and they (Policemen) from Alagbon keyed into his antics and started calling her to report in their office when a similar allegation was subsisting before Panti SCID.
She said she was shocked when she discovered in one of the conversations with one of the officers at Alagbon that Muyiwa had fraudulently procured another vehicle particulars for the SUV dated August 2024.
“I informed the officer (7th Respondent) that the complainant was my lawful wedded husband and he has instituted a divorce proceedings. The officer refused to listen but told me that Muyiwa had fresh car papers for the SUV dated August 2024.
“It turns out that the 10th Respondent had gone to forge car papers for the SUV, all in a bid to claim ownership. Efforts by me to get the Police to provide me with a copy of said car papers were futile as they failed to show me the same,” Oluwapelumi alleged.
A new twist was however added to the matter as the Police had placed ‘Post No Debit’ restrictions on her bank account.
“As of today, the Police have placed PND on my account on the instruction of Muyiwa. It is obvious that he is acting as if he has the entire Nigeria Police Force in his pocket. They forcefully took my SUV from where I parked it as a way of satisfying him.
“They don’t care about any investigation as Muyiwa has told people who were close to me that he is going to make Nigeria inhabitable for me because he has full control of the Police.
“This thing was not clear to me until I discovered that he had instituted three false allegations against me in Lagos and Abuja. What have I done? I’m shocked to see that Police will allow themselves to be used by Muyiwa without following the law and order,” Oluwapelumi cried out.
