Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the composition of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) to enhance consumer rights protection and promote fair trade practices in the state.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and consumer-friendly business environment.
The newly constituted council consists of professionals, government officials, and business representatives, tasked with regulating market practices, preventing consumer exploitation, and addressing complaints.
The council will be chaired by Dr. Umar Garba Haruna, with Alhaji Zangina Jafaru serving as the Executive Secretary. Other key members include:
- Hon. Ibrahim Ahmad Gama – Member Representing Kano Central
- Hajiya Sadiya Umar Bichi – Member Representing Kano North
- Alhaji Hussaini Bello Gidado – Member Representing Kano South
- Alhaji Munzali Abubakar – Representative of Business Community I (Kantin Kwari Market)
- Ali Muhammad Adakawa – Representative of Business Community II (Kwanar Singa)
- Alhaji Ahmed Isah Chedi – Representative of Business Community III (Dawanau Market)
- Sani Gambo – Representative of Business Community IV (Abubakar Rimi Market)
- Barr. Halima Yahuza Ahmad – Representative of Ministry of Justice
- Prof. Salisu Ibrahim Ahmad – Representative of Ministry of Health
- Aminu Gidado Yushe’u – Representative of Ministry of Environment
- Bashir Shehu Gezawa – Representative of Ministry for Local Government
- Maryam Halilu Haruna (Director Special Duties) – Representative of Ministry of Women Affairs
- Bashir Uba (Director Investment) – Representative of Ministry of Investment/Commerce
- Engr. Faisal Mahmud – Representative of Ministry of Transportation (Agency)

Governor Yusuf highlighted that the council’s primary responsibility is to ensure businesses operate under fair and lawful conditions while protecting the public from substandard goods and unethical business practices.
“This initiative aligns with our administration’s commitment to promoting good governance, boosting market confidence, and safeguarding consumers from exploitation,” the governor stated.
The council is expected to commence operations immediately, handling consumer complaints, regulating trade practices, and fostering a safer and more transparent business environment in Kano State.
