The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning that it will initiate a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is detained by the Nigeria Police.
This threat was made on Tuesday morning at the NLC headquarters following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. The meeting was convened to address the police’s invitation to the NLC President over allegations related to terrorism financing.
The NEC resolved that Ajaero would comply with the police summons but instructed their legal adviser to request an extension for his appearance.
Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, NLC Deputy President, urged the nation’s workforce to stay alert for further instructions, should the police decide to detain Ajaero.
He stated, “As a responsible labor center, we will comply with the police invitation because we are not a faceless organization. However, our lawyer is working on securing an extension of time.
“In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will immediately down tools. Please await further directives from our leadership.”
