Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed Bayero University, Kano, to suspend its ongoing demolition exercise following the tragic incident in Rimin Zakara, Ungogo Local Government Area, where three lives were lost and several others injured.
This directive was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.
During a visit to the Rimin Zakara community, Governor Yusuf met with the bereaved families, expressing his heartfelt condolences and announcing that the state government would take responsibility for sponsoring the families of the three deceased victims.
He further ordered the immediate settlement of medical bills for the injured and provided food items to support affected families.
In a gesture of lasting charity (sadaqatu jariya), the governor pledged to construct a new Juma’at mosque in Rimin Zakara, dedicated to the departed souls.
He also unveiled a comprehensive development plan for the community, which includes connecting Rimin Zakara to the electricity grid, constructing solar-powered boreholes for clean water supply as well as establishing a primary healthcare center to enhance medical services.
Others include; developing an access feeder road to improve transportation within the community.
Governor Yusuf condemned the use of live ammunition on innocent citizens, warning security forces that such actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
To ensure accountability, he has set up an investigative committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and identify those responsible.
Additionally, the governor summoned the management of Bayero University, Kano, to his office and directed them to halt all demolition activities with immediate effect.
He reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the over 40-year-old land dispute between Rimin Zakara and the university, pledging to find a lasting solution that serves all parties involved.
The Rimin Zakara community leader, Baba Habu Mikail, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Yusuf for his intervention, stating that the community would never forget his kindness. Likewise, Chairman of Ungogo Local Government, Tijjani Amiru, commended the governor’s swift response and described him as a leader who prioritizes the well-being of his people.
Governor Yusuf’s visit and the announced measures have provided hope to the Rimin Zakara community as they seek to heal and rebuild in the aftermath of the tragedy.
