The family of the late Nigerian singer and songwriter Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, has demanded justice over his death as the first anniversary of his passing approaches.
In a petition to the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission, the Aloba family, through their lawyer, Taiwo Odumosu Esq., has demanded an immediate overhaul of the Lagos State Police team investigating the case.
They are urging the deployment of experienced investigators from Abuja to take over, citing serious concerns about the current handling of the investigation.
The family in its petition outlined multiple lapses in the investigation, beginning with the failure to secure the crime scene following Mohbad’s death.
According to the petition, the police did not cordon off the area, which allowed potential evidence to be compromised.
The family also highlighted that the DVR from Mohbad’s CCTV system was removed, yet the police have not pursued this critical lead, raising doubts about the integrity of the investigation.
Another major grievance of the family is the police’s inadequate response when Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, sought a police report at the time of his son’s death.
The family’s petition also averred that Mr. Aloba was forced to wait for three hours at the police station, only to be denied the necessary documentation.
They further criticized the delay on case. calling it a grossly insensitive and unprofessional response that has only served to delay justice for Mohbad.
In addition to these concerns, the Aloba family alleges that significant evidence and testimonies have been overlooked by the police.
They noted that : “During the Coroner’s Court proceedings, it was revealed that blood splashes were found on the walls and duvet in the room where Mohbad and his wife had an altercation before his death and despite multiple witnesses corroborating these findings, the police failed to include this information in their report, leading the family to suspect a possible cover-up.”
They also points to the lack of forensic examination of Mohbad’s phones, which are currently in the possession of his wife. The family believes that these devices could contain vital information that might clarify the circumstances leading to Mohbad’s death.
“The police’s failure to conduct a forensic analysis, combined with their mishandling of the crime scene, has prompted us to question the professionalism of the investigative team.
The Aloba family is however insisting on a thorough review of all officers involved in the investigation, including an examination of their financial records, to rule out any potential conflicts of interest or corruption. They believe that only a fresh, unbiased team from Abuja can restore public confidence in the investigation and ensure that justice is served.
They are urging the authorities to take their concerns seriously, emphasizing that they will not rest until those responsible for any wrongdoing are held accountable.
