The Lagos State Police Command has reinstated the security details of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, following their unexpected withdrawal on Thursday morning.
Confirming the development, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, stated that the four security officers attached to the Speaker have been restored after an internal review.
Jimoh explained that the withdrawal was part of an ongoing nationwide audit of police personnel and firearms, aimed at ensuring officers are properly deployed and accounted for.
He noted that this exercise was not exclusive to Lagos but was being conducted across all state police commands.
“Lagos, with a population of about 20 million people, has approximately 18,000 police personnel.
This is grossly inadequate for a state of its size and importance,” he said. “The audit will help us identify officers on unauthorized duty posts and redeploy them to divisions where they can effectively contribute to public safety.”
The police commissioner emphasized that the review was not politically motivated but a routine exercise to strengthen security operations.
He assured the public that prominent individuals who require police protection must have valid approvals and apply through the appropriate channels.
Additionally, Jimoh disclosed that an application for police protection had been received from former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing threats to his life and family. This, he said, was processed accordingly.
Meanwhile, security at the Lagos State House of Assembly has been reinforced with additional deployments, including the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Unit, and Armored Personnel Carriers.
The commissioner urged Lagosians to remain calm, assuring them that the police command remains neutral in political affairs and is focused solely on maintaining law and order.
