The leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly escalated on Monday as armed operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police took strategic positions around the Assembly complex.
Security operatives stormed the premises of the legislative chamber, restricting access and disrupting normal activities.
Reports suggest the development is linked to speculation about an alleged plot to remove the Speaker of the House, Mojisola Meranda.
During a visit to the Assembly complex in Alausa, security vehicles and personnel were observed stationed around both the Assembly and the nearby Lagos House.
Meanwhile, 32 lawmakers publicly declared their support for Speaker Meranda, chanting her name in solidarity.
They condemned the armed security presence, describing it as an embarrassment and a violation of legislative independence.
The lawmakers have demanded an explanation from the Director-General of the DSS regarding the invasion, calling the action a disgrace to democracy. They also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restore order.
