The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), a key initiative of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has officially handed over a state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facility to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Ogun State.
The facility, known as the Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC), is designed to enhance students’ learning experiences while fostering digital innovation, research, and development. The initiative aligns with the federal government’s strategy to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide and promote nationwide digital inclusion.
During the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to ensure the long-term sustainability and optimal use of the Centre.
The ETC is fully equipped with 100 desktop computers, modern technology applications, bandwidth, and connectivity tools.
These resources will provide students and faculty members with access to cutting-edge digital infrastructure, helping them develop skills in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
USPF Secretary, Yomi Arowosafe, who represented the agency at the event, emphasized that the ETC symbolizes more than just a physical structure—it represents an investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria. He credited the strategic leadership of the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, as well as the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, for their commitment to expanding ICT access in underserved communities.
Arowosafe highlighted that the USPF has successfully implemented similar access and connectivity projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, contributing significantly to increased ICT penetration.
He expressed confidence that the ETC would serve as a hub for innovation, enabling students and faculty to integrate advanced technology into their academic pursuits while also providing a platform for start-ups and small businesses.
“With OGITECH’s growing student population of 9,300, this Centre is a game-changer,” he said. “It will enhance learning, encourage research, and promote entrepreneurship within the institution and the wider community. We are optimistic about its long-term impact on the Nigerian economy.”
The OGITECH Rector, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, expressed gratitude to the USPF and NCC for selecting the institution as a beneficiary of the project. He assured stakeholders that OGITECH is committed to ensuring the facility is well-maintained and utilized effectively, in line with the provisions of the MoU.
“This initiative will not only benefit our students and faculty but will also have a ripple effect on the larger community. We are determined to maximize its potential,” Oluseye stated.
The USPF, established by the Nigerian government, plays a pivotal role in expanding telecommunications and ICT access in rural and underserved areas. By facilitating initiatives like the ETC, the Fund continues to drive digital equity and economic empowerment across the country.
